Dalriada welcomes Royal Assent of the Pensions Schemes Act and highlights the growing importance of the Independent Person role for LGPS governance
Following the Pensions Schemes Bill receiving Royal Assent, the LGPS is now one step closer to the introduction of final regulations and guidance on good governance and asset pooling, expected in May. In light of the impending changes, Dalriada is encouraging LGPS administering authorities and pension committees to take early steps to prepare for the strengthened governance expectations now set out in legislation.
As the direction of travel becomes clearer, LGPS funds are increasingly focusing on practical ways to enhance decision-making, strengthen oversight and demonstrate effective scrutiny. The appointment of an Independent Person is a valuable way to support this, bringing additional perspective, expertise and constructive challenge.
Mandy Kaur-Sadler, Trustee Director at Dalriada Trustees Limited, was recently appointed as Independent Person to the West Midlands Pension Fund, reflecting the growing focus on independent insight and strengthened governance across the LGPS.
Mandy said: “As LGPS governance continues to evolve, there is an increasing focus on how decisions are supported, challenged and overseen in practice. An Independent Person can add real value by bringing independent perspective, constructive challenge and experienced insight, helping committees make well-informed decisions with confidence.”
